The presentation aims to describe the role of the IAEA in the establishment of an internationally recommended radiation system based on inter alia IAEA safety standards and guidance documents. Such standards and guidance documents are aimed to assist individual countries in establishment of their national radiation safety frameworks. The first part of presentation introduces the process of establishment of radiation standards in general as being based on the contemporary theory and principles of radiation safety and compares such theory with its application in the practice. The second part of the presentation introduces contemporary challenging issues and possible solutions in radiation safety. For example, it introduces selected questions associated with the application of dose constraints, measures toward ensuring radiation safety of food and drinking water, as well as briefly mentions approaches towards ensuring radiation protection of patients in medical applications of ionizing radiation. The presentation also describes the contemporary issues with the natural source of radiation, radon and with graded approach used in ensuring radiation safety in NORM industry.
